Ugh. Made it in to the 9am class today as the hubby and I already have plans tonight and won’t be there at 8pm. So I thought I’d go back to my original coach and classtime of 9am. I miss that female coach and the fun people in that class. Not saying that I don’t enjoy my 8pm class, because I absolutely adore my classmates and coach, but it’s nice to mix it up a little.
So everyone was excited to see me except for a few newbies who don’t know me. My legs were still thrashed from all the overhead squats on Wednesday night and it seemed everyone in there was in the same boat. I just prayed there would be no squats today. I looked at the board and only saw the WOD listed. Hmm… There was a ? next to the warm-up and finisher. Oh no, what are we in for…
- 400m while holding a plate overhead (25lbs max)
Oh yeah, really? So I grabbed a 10 pound plate because I’m not about to kill myself. Lifted over the head, arms locked out, you did 400m fast walking (this is the only time I actually wanted to run, LOL) and if you had to drop the plate you dropped and did 10 burpees right there each time. Oh geez, the mental battle began with the first step. I was about middle of the pack and 1 ahead of me and 1 behind me dropped the plate, so I just kept plowing forward. Luckily I made it there and back without dropping. Yay, no burpees for me!
- 10 minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible)
- 40 lunges while holding a plate overhead (25lbs max)
- 20 pull-ups
- 30 push-ups
Geez, really? Another plate holding torture experience? So here we go… It was rough as everything is a shoulder killer. Sure the lunges are using your legs, but your arms are locked overhead with that plate so when you’re done your shoulders are dying and then you go right into pull-ups. Ugh, shoulders are shredded at the end of those 20 pull-ups and do your shoulders get a break on the 3rd exercise? No, they’re shredded again with push-ups. Then you get back up and do it all over again.
My score: 2+2 and that was really pushing it. I just wanted to hit that 2 round mark so bad.
Short walk to cool down and drop the heart rate and then back in for the mystery finisher…
- 5 minute group high plank hold
Wait, what? We can’t plank from our forearms/elbows? Nope, full plank, arms stacked under shoulders. So how does this “group” part work? Let me spell this out for you. There were 8 in the class so basically each person is allowed to drop once during the 5 minutes, but to be nice we were allowed 1 extra drop as a group. So that boils down to we are allowed 9 drops within the group to not be penalized as a group.
So Coach, what happens if we drop 10 or more times in the 5 minutes? Group punishment, which is… everyone does 30 burpees each!! Oh geez. Well I apologized to our group up front because I could barely lift my water bottle to my mouth because my shoulders were so fatigued and now you want me to hold a plank for 5 minutes which I can’t even do on a good day?
I lasted 1 minute before I dropped and there were 2 people who lasted the whole freaking 5 minutes without dropping but even with that the rest of us dropped more than once so we got stuck doing 30 burpees. Yeah, as if our shoulders aren’t already tired from the plank and everything else they made us do today, lets throw 30 burpees on top of that.
So that is why today’s WOD is heretoforward called “Death by Shoulders”
